As parents and caregivers, you are your child’s most important teacher!! Throughout your child’s day, there are countless opportunities to build language in natural, meaningful ways. The best part? It doesn’t require flashcards, special toys, or added pressure.
Some of the most powerful learning happens during everyday moments like playtime, mealtime, or getting ready for bed.
At our clinic, we love sharing simple, evidence-based strategies that fit seamlessly into your daily routines. These approaches are designed to support children across speech therapy (ST), occupational therapy (OT), and physical therapy (PT) by encouraging connection. When children feel successful and understood, they are more likely to keep trying, and that is where real growth happens!
One of our favorite techniques is called “Copy and Add.” It’s a way to model language for your child while meeting them exactly where they are at. Instead of correcting or asking them to repeat phrases, you’re showing them what the next step in communication can look like. This keeps the interaction positive and builds trust in you as their communication partner.
Take a look below to learn how you can start using this strategy at home!

How to support your child’s expressive language development during everyday interactions:
Listen and Repeat exactly
what your child says to
show you heard them (e.g.,
child says “car,” you say
“car!”).
Add 1–2 words: Expand their
message just a little (“car”
→ “car go”).
Keep it simple: Use short,
clear phrases that are just
one step above your child’s
current level
Model, don’t quiz: Avoid
asking too many questions,
focus on modeling language
instead.
Celebrate attempts:
Respond positively to all
communication, even if it’s
not “perfect”, every try
counts
By weaving strategies like these into your everyday routines, you’re creating a supportive environment where your child can grow! Remember, progress doesn’t come from doing more, it comes from doing things consistently and with intention. If you ever have questions or want more personalized support, our team is always here to help guide you every step of the way.
